1. Second Amendment (2A) Focus: DOJ Goes on the Offensive

The Department of Justice under the Trump administration has launched unprecedented legal challenges targeting blue-state gun restrictions, fundamentally shifting the executive branch’s approach to the Second Amendment.

  • DOJ Sues Virginia & California: The Department of Justice filed federal lawsuits against Virginia and California, alleging that newly enacted firearm bans and restrictions violate the U.S. Constitution.
    • In Virginia: The lawsuit targets Senate Bill 749 (signed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger), which bans AR-15-style rifles and magazines holding over 15 rounds. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated, “The Second Amendment is not a second-class right.” (Note: The law is currently blocked by a statewide preliminary injunction secured by gun rights groups).
    • In California: The DOJ is suing over Assembly Bill 1127, which restricts licensed dealers from selling “semiautomatic machinegun-convertible pistols” (targeting the design of Glock and similar handguns) and challenges the state’s restrictive handgun Roster.
  • SCOTUS Takes Up Major 2A Cases: The U.S. Supreme Court has officially agreed to hear two major challenges to semi-automatic firearm bans: Viramontes v. Cook County (Illinois) and Grant v. Higgins (Connecticut). This sets up a historic showdown that could permanently decide the constitutionality of “assault weapon” bans nationwide.

2. National News: Politics & Economy

  • Trump Defends Crypto Gains: President Trump pushed back against critics regarding his recent financial disclosures, which revealed he made over $500 million from World Liberty Financial—a crypto venture co-founded with his sons. Trump told CNBC there was “nothing illegal” or wrong with the profits.
  • Anemic June Jobs Report: The U.S. economy added a much-fewer-than-expected 57,000 jobs in June, significantly missing market forecasts. Despite the low hiring numbers, the unemployment rate edged down slightly to 4.2%.
  • Trade Uncertainty with USMCA: Washington declined to renew the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), sparking trade uncertainty across North American markets.

3. International News: Global Power Shifts

  • Iran After Khamenei: Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, global attention has shifted to Tehran. While world leaders paid their respects at his funeral, Qatari and Pakistani mediators announced that the next round of U.S.-Iran talks will resume shortly after the ceremonies. President Trump noted that Iran has agreed to “just about everything we need” in ongoing negotiations.
  • US Pilot Killed in Indonesia: A U.S. pilot was killed in Indonesia’s Papua Highlands province after unidentified assailants set his aircraft on fire following a landing at a remote airstrip. Seven passengers escaped without injury, and a local separatist armed group has claimed responsibility.
  • Google Loses Final EU Appeal: The Court of Justice of the European Union upheld a massive €4.1 billion ($4.7 billion) antitrust fine against Google, concluding a long-running battle over Android licensing and pre-installation practices.
